How to Give Your Landscaping a Modern Look

 

Here are a few things we did to give our customer’s landscaping a modern look.

 

Retaining Wall

We added a retaining wall and installed new grass, new plants, an entirely new sprinkler system, and a new lighting system. Everything is modernized; the homeowners can control everything from their phones!

 

Steel Edging

Let me walk you through our process. After the demo was complete we cleaned up the property and then installed steel edging in straight lines and 90° angles, for that modern look.

After the steel edging, we moved into the rock work. We always lay down a high-quality, thick commercial fabric to keep weeds from popping through. Our client wanted black Tejas to match the black accents in their house. We also used a black Mexican beach pebble. It’s almost like an Arizona-style river rock, but it has more blacks in it and fewer colors.

 

Concrete

We had a crew come in to start laying the foundation for the front and back retaining wall. Then, we had our concrete workers come in and lay the new concrete stepping pads for the walkway to the house. We had to get a city permit for the small piece in the front, but we handled that.

 

Sprinkler System

After the wall, we had our sprinkler guys come in. They dug new trenches to lay the new sprinkler system. We got heads to over every single bit of plant material, with bubblers on all the trees because they like to soak up water. We also made sure to have good coverage on all the grass. As we did this we added drainage, to make sure water wouldn’t pool up against the foundation. That drain leads out to the front of the street.

Everything in the sprinkler system is set off into different zones. We have specific drip lines for all the pots and vegetable troughs on the property, and then different zones for the grass, the plants, and the bubblers. They can control it all from their phones, whether they are at home or on vacation in Hawaii. Once you set up the zones, you just click a button, and boom! The system is watering for you!

Plants

We brought in new plants: Japanese maples, Monrovia dwarf vitex, and bright cherry laurels. These plants look great and they still achieve that modern look. Once all the plants were in we installed the lighting. These lights are completely controllable. The homeowners can control the color, hue, and temperature of the light! They can make them brighter. They can change one to red, and the next to green. They can create custom setting programs for all the lights.

 

Sod Installation

 

Finally, we installed new grass on the whole property. We put in Saint Augustine Raleigh in the front, which is great for both shade and sun, has good drainage, and is drought tolerant. In the back, the client wanted to go with Zoysia Emerald Green, which is a very thick, thin-bladed turf, drought resistant, and pet tolerant. They just got a new puppy who likes to tear it up back there. It’s a beautiful grass, almost like a golf course.

 

The Result

The result is a completely modernized look for the house. Everything is updated and it looks fantastic! Our client is thrilled and cannot wait to live in this space.
